At sundown Friday, about 1.2 percent of Louisvillians began fasting in observance of Yom Kippur.  If you’re not a part of the hungry few, this weekend can be very delicious, and philanthropic.  The Germantown-Schnitzelberg neighborhoods are hosting two special cookout events that give proceeds to charities and nonprofit organizations.

The first Germantown-Schnitzelburg BBQ Competition is on Saturday, September 18.  Michele’s on Goss and the Goss Avenue Antique Mall are sponsoring the event on the antique mall’s grounds at 946 Goss.  There will be 13 grilling teams competing in pork spare ribs, chicken and open grill divisions.  Those that compete in all three divisions qualify for the Grand Champions Prize which is a three night, four day stay in Las Vegas, with airfare.   If the winner is from the neighborhood, stay tuned for a Germantown-Schnitzelburg t-shirt cameo in a picture in front of the Venetian.

Judging this contest is a list of local celebrity chefs that cover an array of cuisines.  The judges will be chefs Dallas McGarity, Excecutive of Equus and Jacks, Dan McMahon, owner of Danny Mac's Pizza, Scot Pierce from BMB Productions and Secrets of Louisville Chefs, Brian Morgan of Eiderdown, the new German Restaurant opening on Goss Ave, and Alexis Hernandez, this seasons competitor on the Food Network’s The Next Food Network Star.

Proceeds go directly to benefit GoGreen Germantown.   GoGreen Germantown is a local environmental organization focused on
“greening” the Germantown-Schnitzelburg area, both literally and
    figuratively.
