The city of Louisville is synonymous with few things more than the Kentucky Derby, the Superbowl of horse racing the storied tradition of the Derby and Churchill Downs are laid out in tremendous detail at the Kentucky Derby Museum; and because of the history it represents, especially this time of year it is a Sports legend of the ‘Ville.
Celebrating its 28th birthday this April the Kentucky Derby Museum, stands as a nod to the history of the city’s equine heritage right next to, where else, Churchill Downs, it’s become such a staple in fact that the museum welcomes an average 210,000 visitors annually.
After a 2010 expansion the non-profit museum began its new slogan and in a bigger sense, it’s new philosophy centering around the fun of the Derby.
In addition, to the museum the organization offers educational opportunities as well as preservation programs.
Visitors can view and interact with thousands of items that can only be found at the museum, as well as actually meet pass Derby winners. Currently visitors can actually hang out with Derby winner Mine that Bird who will be at the museum until the spring meet begins.
In addition, the museum is currently celebrating horse racing all-star Secretariat in a special anniversary exhibit and honoring the Derby’s favorite party “the in-field.”
Of course, the permanent exhibits range from interactive games to see if you have what it takes to be a jockey as well as countless other exhibits which show the Derby’s history, present, and future in all of its glory.
The museum itself, is more about the horse racing tradition in the area than it is about the one event, but make no mistake it’s called the Derby museum for a reason and features many of the famed items, memorabilia, etc. from the Derby’s rich history.
