Woven through the tapestry of our humble city, coloring our land-locked valley are countless immigrants that call Louisville home. Often-times we step outside our doors and casually wave to the mono-chromatic neighbors that surround us, but rarely do we have the pleasure of celebrating the beautiful diversity of our city. Only at my day-job, in the public school system of Jefferson County am I reminded of the cultures that call this area home.
This weekend is the 8th annual WorldFest on the Belvedere. This unique festival showcases the cornucopia of cultures that reside in Louisville. Friday and Saturday from 11-11, you and the family can experience a cultural pride parade, a naturalization ceremony for the 400 immigrants granted citizenship in the area, oodles of local ethnic cuisine, affordable imported goods, hourly music events, coffee cupping classes featuring an eye-opening lecture on the cultural implications of coffee from the source to the cup, and more.
This is a perfect family-friendly (and did I mention FREE) event that everyone will enjoy. There is even a partitioned section especially for children where they can create their own ethnic inspired art and participate in various cultural games. My family and I have gone every year for the past five, and have never been let down.
This weekend, step outside the neighborhood and join the diverse Louisville family. Share a shawarma, and relish in delightful tapestry that is our city.
