I first saw the term "Pegasus Pin" when I was searching for information about Thunder Over Louisville. stated that the Waterfront Park location admission is free with a Pegasus Pin. Being new to Louisville, my response was "What's a Pegasus Pin?!"

So, I Googled it. This brought me to the There is a lengthy explanation about how Pegasus Pins are a Derby tradition and they "capture the heart and soul of the Festival" and they are collectibles, and so on. But, what is it?!  I began to wonder is the Pegasus Pin a mythical creature like its inspiration? I kept Googling.

I found out that the Pegasus Pin will get you into many upcoming events. You can stay late at the Derby Museum Grand Re-Opening Celebration, get admission into the Chow Wagon, and get admission to Run for the Rose, just to name a few. At this point, now not only do I want to know what it is, but I want one!

Finally, I figured out through my searching that it is an actual pin that is purchased and then pinned/worn on your clothing. The cost seems to vary ($4 or $5). The one thing that was still vague is where do you get them. You can buy them online at, but it seemed silly to pay for shipping on a $4 item. I finally decided to just wait until I got to Thunder and hope I could find someone selling them.

Well, after all that, my husband and I went to Walgreens on Baxter this past weekend to grab some milk and guess what we found...Pegasus Pins! The mythical mystery was solved! They sell Pegasus Pins everywhere. I was extremely excited to buy my very own pin, and my husband had a laugh at my expense (since he knew how this Pegasus was vexing me). We bought two. They came in a little pouch so you don't know what color your getting and it even comes with a few coupons. The search was over and mission accomplished...though I wish I had gotten a purple one.
