Weber Gallery opened its doors in Halloween style for the celebration, from the Requiem playing in the background to the full layout of spooky foods, delicious and delightfully prepared. Witches Brew and ladyfingers lay amongst an array of seasonal delicacies, thanks to Heitzman Bakery and The Bakery.

The best treat of all however, was the art that lined the walls. Paying tribute to Halloween season and the city’s 2011 Photo Biennial, Weber Gallery displayed photography and mixed media from various artists. The art was sinister and some of the stretching does actually take you to the edge of reality. Better than “the twilight zone” and not too gory, yet you’d have to appreciate art to appreciate this media. I appreciate art and thought these sketching’s, photos and mixed media were some of the best I have seen for a Halloween display.

Artist Keith Auerbach, Chris Skaggs, Lydia Comer and Elizabeth Hadley, Dennis Bessenecker, Aron Conaway, Melody Dennison and Sean Garrison, Mason Maxey, Candy Wheat and artists of StudioWorks, Creative Diversity, and Dreams with Wings, along with Carol Mueller of Weber Gallery all made this Awful Revolting Terrible Halloween Celebration a celebration to remember.

Weber Gallery does a lot of work with artist with disabilities. They turn disabilities into abilities through artistic interaction and expression, working with mixed media. Andrew Sykes of Cedar Lake Lodge created a mixed media shark display for the exhibit that was very impressive.

The piece de’resistance of the night: Chris Skaggs graphite The Price of Political Correctness. It is a wonderful sketch that details unclothed people inside cages. The cages themselves have faces. When asked why the cages have faced Chris replied, “It represents the animal in each of us. We have to work hard to control ourselves sometimes, the thoughts, and work hard to be less correct, we are forced to live within our head, if you’ve ever listened to John Prine. ” I went home and listened to John Prine and now I understand, and thanks to Chris, I found another music artist I like. So if you’re wondering what it’s all about, well, ask Chris Skaggs at Blum Ornamental Glass in Louisville, or go listen to John Prine on YouTube.

Carol Mueller and The Weber Art Gallery really know how to put on a great Halloween party. It makes one wonder what they are cooking up for Christmas…I bet old Saint Nick knows the address at 1151 South Fourth Street Louisville, KY 40203

Congratulations to Weber Gallery for winning the 2011 Excellence’s “Art of Vision” Pyramid Award.
