I've never had much of an eye for fashion. I'm a straight male, after all. Maybe I shouldn't stereotype, though – there are plenty of straight males who are all about some fashion. Hell, I regularly take hot baths with scented salts – one of my favorite means of relaxation. And I cried during Titanic
. I'm not ashamed. But fashion has never interested me. I've worn the same basic clothing palette since high school. I like to stick with plain, generally darker tones. My ex, however, is passionate about fashion. It was something I appreciated about her – a strong passion for any creative endeavor is cause for admiration. We need our passions. They are what make life worth living. They should be what we strive towards.
Diana Vreeland was passionate about fashion. She was a columnist for
Harper's Bazaar
for 25 years, from 1937 to 1962, after which she moved on to
Vogue
for eight years, followed by a 13 year stint at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a consultant to the Costume Institute. She had a very successful and influential career, even working as Jacqueline Kennedy's fashion consultant at one point. She died in 1989 of a heart attack at the healthy age of 86.
This year, a documentary was completed about her life and work, entitled
Diana Vreeland: The Eye Has to Travel
. It is currently being screened at Village 8 Theaters as part of the Louisville Exclusives Series. I must confess a bit of a snafu on my part – today, Thursday, is the final day of its limited run there. I'm sure my regular and devoted readers will forgive my overdue notification, given the holiday nature of the past week.
