Some people really love clothes and their splendiferous variety. This is a mystery to me, who has roughly the same wardrobe I did ten years ago, comprised of dark neutral colors out of a general dislike of drawing attention to myself through my outer appearance. (And really, who says we need clothes anyway?) People exist, however, who are absolutely crazy about clothing, and was in fact married to a woman who had a great interest in fine fashion and clothing design. It may be an art form only to be fully appreciated by the obscenely rich, but it is an art form nonetheless, and a lot of work comes from the powers-that-be into deciding and designing just what fashions will be most acceptable to the world.
That world is, of course, not without its drama, and one such story is the subject of the documentary Dior and I, directed by Frédéric Tcheng, playing now at Village 8 as the newest installment in its Louisville Exclusives series. The original Christian Dior ceased life in 1957, but the company carried on, continuing to produce fabulous clothes to wow the fashion world. In 2012 Raf Simons took over as creative director of Dior – but not without some apprehension from those in the know. A skilled designer, some felt that his style clashed with that of classic Dior; this documentary is about the struggle of Simons to prove his worth to the company and to the fashion world.
