This week, the Louisville Exclusives series at Village 8 – which strives to bring foreign, art, and limited-run films to our local viewing public – strikes with three offerings: different visions bringing you to the world of horticultural obsession, the madness behind the music, and the bizarre machinations of confinement.
A Little Chaos, directed by Alan Rickman, tells the story of the garden of King Louis XIV (played by Rickman). In the garden are two landscape artists who are passionate about their work. They strive for the new and creative, and with such a romantic setup they of course they fall in love.
Love & Mercy, directed by Bill Pohlad, is the story of Brian Wilson (of the Beach Boys, of course). Portrayed via a dual timeline, Paul Dano is the young Brian Wilson at the height of the Beach Boys’ career, while John Cusack is Wilson a little later on in life. Wilson is a creative genius, but a tortured soul. What happens to Brian Wilson? If you know your music history, you know (kind of a real-life spoiler alert, I suppose).
The Wolfpack won, director Crystal Moselle, the U.S. Documentary Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Moselle came upon her subject matter when she happened upon six strange-looking individuals in Manhattan. These were the Angulo brothers, kept confined in their home, homeschooled, learning about the world only through movies and television. They learned to express their visions of the world through their own home movies and reenactments. Then, one of them escapes. These movies are all initially scheduled to run for one week until Thursday, July 2 (however, this is subject to extension). Village 8 is located at 4014 Dutchmans Lane. Further theater information and show times can be found at the Village 8 website.
