Dreaming, daring and dancing. Dreaming of more important research for pediatric oncology and hemotology, Dr. Ken Lucas, of Kosair Children’s Hospital, will receive of gift from students daring to raise red and dance for a cause.
UofL’s RaiseRed, which takes place next Friday, is an 18-hour dance marathon capping students’ daring fundraising efforts from throughout the year. The philanthropic event on campus benefits Dr. Lucas and his research. This year Dr. Lucas was named one of the Best Doctors in America, which is known worldwide honor that only five percent of doctors in the U.S. earn, by Best Doctors Inc.
In 2013, 350 Louisville students raised $73,000. This year students have dared themselves to exceed their past accomplishments and have 500 dancers raise at least $100,000. With fundraisers at Drakes in St. Matthews, Bombozz Taphouse in the Highlands, RaiseRed has worked throughout the year to make their goal.
“We’re dancing for kids that may never be able to dance. We’re staying up all night because they may never have that experience,” said Raise Red Executive Director Taylor Davis to UofL Magazine.
Students are required to raise at least $50 to get in the door at the dance marathon. Contributions are tax deductible and are part of the university’s Charting Our Course Campaign.
Dancers have planned, fundraised and now, it’s almost time to dance. One dancer at a time, RaiseRed plans to help save the lives of one child at a time suffering from cancer.
