My third year of Fantasy Football has drawn to a close. I’m in last place, as usual. It’s not all that surprising-I actually know so little about football some would say I have no business playing at all. But I can talk trash with the best of them and it gives me an excuse to watch football on the weekends.
So what have I learned from my Fantasy experience? Plenty.
For starters, I cannot draft a good running back to save my life. Three years ago I drafted Darren McFadden on a shared team and he did pretty well. Then I drafted him again last year and he was injured every other game. But of course I did not learn my lesson. I convinced myself he would be better this year. He was not.
I also have learned a hard lesson-running backs are much more important to a Fantasy team than any other position, including a quarterback. So perhaps keeping the Seahawks defense as my second draft pick in our keeper league and then drafting Matthew Stafford as my third pick and not even getting a running back until my FOURTH pick was a mistake. Perhaps.
Maybe drafting TWO kickers in the initial draft was not a good idea. Maybe I should have drafted better running backs or tight ends or wide receivers before I drafted such a low-scoring position. But Sebastian Janikowski and David Akers did so well for me last year, how could I not get them again? And I had Janikowski in my shared team when he tied the record for longest field goal in 2011, scoring us some insane amount of points for a kicker.
But there’s no place for sentimentality in Fantasy Football.
So what did I do right? Last year I drafted Andrew Luck as my starting quarterback. He had such an amazing rookie year I made him my number one draft pick in our keeper league this year. I’m glad I did because now I’m a Colts fan for life.
If we do a keeper league again next year, Luck will still be my number one. Number two is a tossup between Danny Amendola and Darren McFadden. As much as I like to think I’ll pick Amendola, we all know it’s going to be McFadden. It’s always McFadden.
