It’s the “C” word. It seems everyone knows someone who is battling it and currently it seems to be in every book, film and television show. For several weeks now, the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft has been featuring an exhibit entitled “Redefining Normal: A Photo Documentary of Children Fighting Cancer” by up and coming photographer Paige Greene, and you should go see it.
Paige Greene is a young twenty-something that is studying documentary photography at Western Kentucky University. She is also a survivor of acute myeloid leukemia and former patient of Kosair Children’s Hospital. Greene says in her artist’s statement, “The purpose of the Redefining Normal photography project was to provide honest photographs of what its like to have cancer as a child. Through providing honest photos I aim to show the people in the photographs as they are, simply kids who just happen to be sick. I wanted people to see how normal these kids are instead of being afraid to look at them or talk about it. Kids are more resilient than we think and hopefully you can see the good in that.”
Greene will be giving a lecture on Monday, January 9th from 6 – 9 p.m. at the museum. Joining her will be Kosair Children’s Hospital pediatric oncology specialist Salvatore Bertolone, M.D., professor of pediatric Hematology and Oncology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. Admission is free for this event.
The exhibition is made possible by the Expressive Art Therapy programs at Kosair Children’s Hospital, Norton Cancer Institute and the Children’s Hospital Foundation. The exhibit ends January 14th. KMAC is located at 715 W. Main Street.
