The Big Day is finally here for both Louisville and Jeffersonville! I’m sure many of you, like myself, thought it’d be a never ending project, but we were proven wrong and now it is time to celebrate. The long awaited Big Four pedestrian bridge will be having its rededication ceremony this Wednesday at 5:00 pm.
The celebration is going to begin with a parade starting on both sides of the bridge. Mayor Fischer and Governor Steve Beshear will lead the Kentucky side and Mayor Moore will be leading the Indiana side. “Families, joggers, bikers, and everyone who loves the bridge are invited to participate and decorate their bikes, wagons, strollers, etc. Participants are asked to line up on either ramp,” as stated in Mayor Fischer’s announcement of this big celebration. The two parades will meet in the middle for the rededication ceremony.
“This is a day that has been long anticipated and it will be remembered for even longer, especially by the young people taking their first trip across the bridge,” Governor Beshear said in the announcement. The celebrating isn’t expected to end after the parade though. Following the parade will be the WFPK Waterfront Wednesday on the river on the Louisville side. This concert is open to the public and will be featuring the Old 97’s, The Whigs, and Dawn Landes. Meanwhile on the Indiana side, downtown Jeffersonville’s bars, restaurants, and businesses will be staying open even later.
The wait for this bridge has been worth it. The Big Four Bridge is already a hit, especially with the sun coming out. A high volume of people already enjoy running, walking, and biking on the bridge. The bridge gives a great opportunity for Louisville citizens to venture to downtown Louisville and vice versa. “Whether you want a beer, or an ice cream cone or to do a little shopping, downtown Jeffersonville is ready to make your trip across the bridge even more fun, no matter which side you start on,” says Mayor Moore said on the announcement. Don’t miss out on this mile stone for two cities and one bridge!
