Louisville’s food scene is one filled with everything from sticky dives to high-class bistros. The taco scene in Louisville really runs the gambit on this one - you can grab a taco from a food truck window, or you can sit down and eat your meal in a classy restaurant. Guaca Mole is the latter experience.
The nicest taco joint I’ve been to thus far, Guaca Mole Cocina Mexicana (9921 Ormsby Station Rd.) is another Martinez creation that has helped make the Louisville food scene one of the best. The food is definitely reflective of the kind of fare that you can find with the other restaurants in this empire - Coconuts Beach and El Taco Luchador, specifically, but the experience is unique.
The dinner menu’s taco selection is smaller than that of the lunch menu, but still includes their amazing pescado taco -- tempura fresh cod (fried or grilled), spicy crab meat aioli and pickled red cabbage are all wrapped up in a fluffy tortilla ($15). The meal comes with three pretty hefty tacos, rice and black beans.
I have to admit that after scarfing the nachos - a delicious, baked mess of braised short ribs, guacamole, pico de gallo, duranguense cheese, pickled jalapenos and sour cream over fresh tortilla chips ($9) - I wasn’t actually able to finish my tacos. My eyes were bigger than my stomach, but I’m not sorry about it.
I was also able to try the carne asada, a helping of deliciously marinated and grilled skirt steak, served with a side of beans and rice, as well as tortillas ($17).
If you’re in the mood for a night out and some of the best, most flavorful food that the city has to offer, head to Guaca Mole, grab a glass of their sangria, and stuff your face with a delicious taste of upscale fare in a warm atmosphere.
