    Bit to Do

The University of Louisville is teaming up with J.B. Atkinson Academy for Excellence in Teaching and Learning to help students avoid the well-known “summer slide.”

Beginning today, June 10 through July 3, the program Summer Boost, run in conjunction with UofL’s College of Education and Human Development, is being offered to aid in avoiding the risk of slipping reading skills that occur so often during the summer with school students. There are about 110 elementary students enrolled in the summer program, and it is at full capacity. Funded by the Sutherland Foundation, these students will benefit in maintaining their reading skills over the summer during this intense daily program. Because of the generous funding, the students receive transportation, breakfast and lunch meals provided to them, field trips that will enhance their learning over the summer, and learning materials to accompany their studies. The program is staffed by UofL students and faculty and Atkinson teachers.

According to UofL literacy professor Christine Sherretz, “Programs like this can make a big difference. Not only are the students learning new material and reinforcing what they already know but they are learning in a fun, engaging environment. We want to boost kids forward so they will be prepared for the next academic year. Best of all, we are connecting kids with books that are of interest to them. In the end, we want to create lifelong readers.”

One of the neat incentives that will supplement this Summer Boost program is that students can earn $40 worth of “book bucks” during their summer reading throughout the course of the program. The money will then be available to them to use on a field trip to Barnes and Noble on the last day of class, July 3.

The relationship between Atkinson elementary school and the University of Louisville stems from the initiative, Signature Partnership, which works to enrich, improve, and heighten the lives of West Louisville residents.
