Snowflake Sighting
There is a new cold-weather creature coming to the zoo! Qannik, a five month old orphaned Alaskan polar bear cub is scheduled to arrive at the Louisville Zoo today, June 28. "Operation Snowflake" is a team of experts in logistics and animal care that will ease the transition of her relocation. Although Qannik is getting used to her surroundings during a standard period of quarantine and won't be available for viewing, stay tuned for her big debut.
Steamboat Race
I know we were heartbroken the Steamboat Race was not part of the Derby Festival this year, but no need to mourn any more… Tomorrow, Turner Construction Company will host the annual Steamboat Race along the Ohio for the most languid hour in sports. Grab some lawn chairs and watch The Belle of Louisville battle it out with the Belle of Cincinnati (the Delta Queen has now retired and works as a floating hotel in Chattanooga). The winner of the race is now determined by a series of five tasks assigned to each competitor such as a Calliope Contest (???) and other tasks performed by the board crew. No need to cross the bridge first. A set of silver-plated antlers is the prize coveted by each vessel. Spectators are free, but the Waterfront property will also be shared with WFPK's Waterfront Wednesday, so expect a crowd. The race begins promptly at 6:00 pm, but arrive early to snag the best viewing spots.
