The on-set of Derby season is in full-gear, but if you are not into the ponies and bourbon, never fear--there are actually a few things for families happening this week. Hopefully the rain will subside and families can once again celebrate spring with a few of the activities below.
Grand Opening of Glacier Run at the Louisville Zoo: Tomorrow, April 26, Glacier Run (where the Polar Bears hang-out) will open to the general public. Mayor Greg Fisher, the Zoo upper-echelon, and the polar bear scientist will break an ice ribbon (literally) welcoming the public to view the polar and grizzly bears for the first time. According to the Zoo's press release, "Two 6.5 foot ice pillars with salmon, mackerel, trout, and herring will be dismantled and presented to Arki, the polar bear, and Inga, Otis, and Rita, the grizzly bears…" Yum. The festivities begin at 10:00, with the ice pillars presented to the bears at 10:40.
WFPK presents Waterfront Wednesday: Always a great outdoor experience for the family, bring a blanket and relax to the music of Walk the Moon (9:00), Sarah Jaffe (7:30), and the Deloreans (6:00). Due to the flooding, April 27th's show will be relocated to the newly opened Big Four Lawn, located just west of the Big Four Bridge. I've had a great experience taking my children--pack some snacks and utilize the playgrounds, and everybody's happy. My three-year-old daughter loves Sarah Jaffe's song "Vulnerable" (and so does her mama). Learn more about the artists on WFPK's website and stay tuned for further weather variables. Yew Dell 9th Annual Plant Sale: Located just off the 71 N bypass in Oldham County, Yew Dell Gardens is a beautiful place to share with the family. This Saturday, April 30 from 10-4:00 p.m. and May 1 from 11-3:00, Yew Dell will offer outstanding plant selections, an assortment of vendors, a bonsai show, activities for kids, food, and more. The event is free with regular admission, but early admittance is suggested to score the best greenery.
