For Thunder over Louisville, my family and I decided to stay on the Indiana side as guests at the Market Street Inn, which is about a block from the river in Jeffersonville. The Inn is featured in the beautiful cookbook/photo book Room at the Table
Okay, we did actually venture out and walk around Riverside Park between our five or six meals at the inn (click that link to see the pictures!). Oh, and there were fireworks and an air show.
The Good:
1. The festive atmosphere on the Indiana side of the river, where it wasn't too crowded, too loud, or too riddled with trash. And when it got to be too much, I had an Inn to which I could retreat.
2. Staying at an Inn means not having to use the Port-o-Potties, getting to take jacuzzi baths in the middle of the day, and having a mere flight of stairs constitute the commute back at the end of the evening.
The Bad:
1. The Inn was more crowded than I was expecting - it was not the quiet retreat I was hoping for. It seemed like the owners invited all kinds of people other than the guests to come and spend the day there. I was constantly bumping into people. Ugh.
2. Figures my first time at Thunder would coincide with the longest delay
in recorded history! And was it me, or did the music never really catch
up to the fireworks? And those fireworks did not seem like they ever really coordinated with each other in any meaningful way. And what's up with the extreme overrepresentation of male vocalists in the choice of music? Completely unnecessary and uncalled for.
All in all, though, it was a great experience. But next year: I want to be on a boat.
