The Speed Art Museum recently closed its doors for a good, long, three years. Many people in Louisville were very sad about the closing. On the bright side, there is so much to look forward to as the community awaits the renovations that will transform the museum into a state of the art facility. I eagerly anticipate the changes and what the museum will bring back to the grateful Louisvillians who miss it dearly.

Did you know, though, that the Speed Museum may have physically closed its doors, but its educators and staff are taking the museum out to the city? We don’t have to completely forget about this great museum! The Speed About Town program takes workshops to the people. What a wonderful outreach endeavor!

This month’s feature is Pop-Up Hands-On Family Art Studios. The studio is led by Speed Art Museum staff and is held at the Huff Gallery at Spalding University. The Huff Gallery is hosting a With Child: Art and Parenting exhibition. This art workshop is a fantastic opportunity to remain connected with the Speed Art Museum and its fabulous art series for families. The family art studios will be held on Sundays, November 11 and 18 from 12pm-3pm. The Huff Gallery is located at 853 Library Lane. To top it off, admission is free!

On Sunday, November 11 experiment with mixed media on a small scale in this Artist Trading Card Starter Workshop. Combine paper, fabric, embellishments, and stickers with stamping, stenciling, and other techniques to create artworks to collect and trade with family, friends, and others across the city.

The following Sunday, November 18 is the Artist Trading Card Make-It & Swap-It Workshop. Speed Art Museum staff will show you how to create new cards, sign-up to participate in a city-wide postal swap, and trading card making techniques you can do at home.

And I just discovered that the museum is having a huge sale, selling everything but the kitchen sink! The sale is Friday, November 9 from 9am-4pm. Keep up to date with the Speed Art Museum on their Facebook page and through email newsletters.
