    Bit to Do

Louisville has a reputation as a hard drinking town where locals think nothing of staying out until the bars close at 4 am. They're just as hardcore across the river in Southern Indiana, but this month they're showing it off in a more genteel way. That's right, our clever neighbors have found a way to make drinking in the afternoon socially accceptable - they turn it into a festival.

This weekend is Southern Indiana Uncorked. Next weekend is the Fest of Ale. Over in Louisville...nada. Alright, Southern Indiana, you can get a leg up on us in locally produced wine and beer, but at least Kentucky still has our bourbon.

Southern Indiana Uncorked is a stupidly good deal. For $10, you get to taste a dozen wines and take home a commemorative glass. I pay more than that for a bottle of Malbec at Liquor Barn. Heck, that's less than the cost of one cocktail at Proof on Main. Memorial Day weekend is all about live music, so you'll also get to hear Amanda Lucas, Arnett Hollow, and Hambone. If good music isn't enough to help you enjoy your buzz, you can also wander over to the local craft fair. The festival is from 1-7 pm on Saturday at the Harrison County Fairgrounds in Southern Indiana.

If you're more into beer than wine, stop by Southern Indiana's Fest of Ale next weekend. The $30 tickets buy you an opportunity to sample beers from over 40 different breweries while enjoying music from The Flying Saucers. This year, they're tossing a little wine into the mix as well. A portion of the proceeds goes to The Crusade for Children, so you know you're not just indulging yourself in an afternoon of drunken debauchery. Oh, no. You're engaged in charity work while also supporting local, independent craftsmen. It's practically your patriotic duty to drink. It takes place June 5 at St. Anthony's of Padua in Clarksville, Indiana.
