At the age of 25 a young man came out of the University of Kentucky, accepting a position as a sportscaster with WHAS television for their major television broadcasts.

That man was a young Paul Rogers, and he had been thrown into the mix by local broadcasting giant Cawood Ledford, armed with a distinctive and powerful voice Rogers immediately gained a following as a member of the 1976 broadcasting crew.

Rogers actually joined WHAS three years prior to that though, working in both television and radio and gaining hands on experience along with his education.

Today ironically despite Roger’s alma mater he has been dubbed the voice of the University of Louisville Cardinals for WHAS radio for years now. Acting as a play-by-play commentator Rogers’ astute calls have made him synonymous with area sports- extending past the Cards, including gigs calling races at Churchill Downs, (most notably the Derby and Breeder’s Cup) and that’s just scraping the surface. In the city of Louisville it seems that Rogers’ voice accompanies the biggest local sports events.

Before all that though the consistent sports fan and Louisville native, Rogers was a 1969 graduate of Eastern High School prior to making his way to Lexington.

His mixture of knowledge and personality has led him to three Kentucky Sportscaster of the Year awards and several Best Sportscaster in Kentucky awards he is also an active member of the Kentucky Sports Authority board.

Known for his work ethic Rogers most known gig calling Louisville ball games has been his since he succeeded local broadcasting giant Van Vance; as such he’s been a staple at that position for about twenty years now.

When one considers the impact that Rogers has had on local and national athletics it’s really not difficult to see why he’s a sports legend of the ‘Ville.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
