Few families have become more known in area football than the Brohms, and specifically this is in regards to the University of Louisville, who have since the 60’s had a steady flow of Brohms in Cardinal jerseys.
However, before Brian and Jeff the patriarch of the family, Oscar had made a name for himself as a standout quarterback.
The Louisville native, first came to regional prominence as a stand out quarterback for Flaget High School. Flaget is the now defunct school where countless athletes came out of, notably two time superbowl champion Paul Hornung to name just one.
Brohm is yet another name etched into the legacy of Flaget. Out of high school, Flaget stayed in his hometown to suit up with the Louisville Cardinals, beginning in 1969 under new Cards coach Lee Corso who was taking over after the retirement of Frank Camp, and thus began a nearly fifty year tradition between the Brohms and the Cards.
Within the city though, following Brohm’s college career he remained one of the biggest supporters of area athletics and specifically University of Louisville football, maintaining a devotion that could only be described as fan like.
Especially when watching his sons beginning with Greg, who would eventually go on to coach. He was followed by Jeff in 1989 who had a stand out career in Louisville, and then with Brian who joined the squad in 2004, through it all Oscar remained one of the biggest supporters of not just his family’s athletic prowess, including daughter Kim, who he remarked might be the most athletic of all his children but Kentuckiana sports as a whole.
Oscar Brohm has always worked towards providing athletic opportunity in the community, as such he was recently inducted into the Louisville Catholic Sports Hall of Fame with his family.                                          Image courtesy of flickr

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
