October means Halloween to many in the area, but in the athletic community it means 5k’s, 10k’s, and various other general “walks.” In addition, there are plenty of other sporting events around town this month which should prove to quench a number of sports fans.

    October 5th

E.P. Tom Sawyer Park will host the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic sponsored by Primal Mud. This morning event is notable for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the number of area entrants who will strap on their cleats to get involved in this race.

Get an early look at Louisville’s basketball team at the KFC Yum! Center, for their annual Red/White Scrimmage which should demonstrate how the Cards are shaping up following their 2013 NCAA championship last year.

    October 5-8

Local Ice-Skating Rink, Iceland will be hosting a three day Figure Skating regional for the Eastern Great Lakes Region. This will pit the top figure skaters in the region against each other, who all are attempting to reach that next round.

    October 10th

The Louisville football team squares off against rival Rutger University at Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium, these two teams have become recent rivals and lately their games have been truly some of the best football in their conferences.

    October 11th

The UofL Volleyball team will be squaring off against South Florida for a competitive match at the KFC Yum! Center.

    October 12th

The Cards’ second men’s red white scrimmage takes off at the Yum! Center, for a practice tip off and subsequent match up.

Louisville football plays hosts to Central Florida, with Strong’s football core which has Florida sensibilities to it, any time the Cards face off against a Sunshine State opponent it always becomes interesting.

    October 19

The Annual Norton Sports Health Great Pumpkin 10K held at the Parklands of Floyd’s Fork, will get going. This event has grown synonymous with the regional Halloween season and for good reason has it always provides opportunities for fun and charity amongst both entrants and fans. This is also the second part of the trilogy of races in the Fall Runathon, which will conclude with LSC’s Half Marathon November 10th.

The Kentucky Fair and Expo Center will be housing this year’s Hwang’s Martial Arts Taekwondo Championship, which will be a showcase of regional karate in several forms.

In addition, professional wrestling will be making its way back to Freedom Hall as WWE Live is in town for a house show that same evening.

    October 29

As Halloween draws ever nearer, the Louisville men’s basketball team will suit up for a pre-season game against Kentucky Wesleyan.

Of course, these events are really just scratching the surface as there will be plenty of other athletic endeavors this month in the Derby City, these are simply a few to look out for.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
