    Bit to Do

Spice up your book club with some fresh reads as Carmichael’s hosts ‘The Cure fo

You will not be required to wear khaki.  There will be no Bundt cakes.  And I can almost guarantee a complete lack of John Grisham.  We all know that book club is something your mom did on Tuesday nights back in the ol’ burbs.  Let’s ponder this wholesome stereotype for a spell: Mom made brownies (sweetened with Splenda of course; let’s not get too naughty), slipped into that neutral cardigan and walked a power-step block with her grocery store paperback for some lively discussion that more or less had some connection to whatever Mary Higgins Clark novel was on the table.  Her name was Kathy.  While this classic meeting of moms may have only occurred in the minds of sit-com writers, the image is vivid enough to stick with a good many of us – like some collective Leave It Beaver memory within our genetic make-up.  Book Club is not for hip cats; the Saltine stereotype may even be too lame for hipsters.

But Carmichael’s has got your back, ye bookworms of badass.  Healthy readers seeking literary companionship need not worry about fitting into ironic little pants – or wearing sensible shoes.  Reading is sexy (and I know it)! Join an intrepid team from the Carmichael’s staff this Monday night at 7pm, August 13th, as they pop a cork and drop some book-worthy hints during the special event “The Cure for the Common Book Club”.

Stepping outside the normal line-up of readings and signings, Carmichael’s is serving up local mischief in a new way as three of Carmichaels’ “exceptional and knowledgeable” staffers step up to the plate to deliver spicy ideas to hum-drum reading circles.  Alongside a spread of refreshments and – ahem – wine, “The Cure for the Common Book Club” will provide attendees with title suggestions from a variety of genres, discussion tactics and a touch of innovation to entertain book-hungry brains.  Giveaways and freebies are also on the agenda for participants.

Carmichael’s has got the tonic for the book club blues. Bring your stories, bring your ideas and – yeah ok, everybody still likes brownies, bring those too.

Carmichael’s Bookstore has two area locations: 1295 Bardstown Road and 2720 Frankfort Avenue.  For more information, visit the event page or call the Frankfort Avenue store at (502) 896-6950.

    About Erin Day

I'm a Louisville native who transplanted home from Las Vegas recently. Don't ask. In my spare time I read a lot of books and drink gin. My soulmate is my 1994 turquoise Ford Ranger - they never made a finer truck. I still totally believe in the Loch Ness Monster. I just want to write for you.
