The Silver Dollar (1761 Frankfort Avenue) is a restaurant I had been looking forward to visiting since a friend and I saw that renovations had begun on the old firehouse located at Frankfort Avenue and Pope Street. We had heard that Green House guru Gil Holland was involved and that the place was supposed to have a 1930’s honky tonk vibe, but that was the extent of any knowledge I had until I stepped through their doors last week.

I met a group of friends and we all agreed that we felt as if we were in a more distinguished version of a Texas Roadhouse. This is by no means an insult, the place has a really cute and comfy vibe. Behind the bar, staff kept drinks pouring and vinyl records playing over the sound system, propping the LP covers up so that diners can sneak a peek at what is playing. Very charming.

Everyone else in my group ordered beer or wine, but I went out on a limb and tried one of The Silver Dollar’s signature cocktails. My choice, a blend of tequila, mescal, ginger beer and fresh strawberries, was absolutely amazing. It was difficult for me not to slurp the entire thing down within minutes. Lightly sweet and just strong enough, I would definitely return to The Silver Dollar if only for this drink.

Having said that, everyone in my group enjoyed their meals well enough, but none of us were blown away. My veggie burger was great, but the bun had been left on the grill much too long and had become very crunchy. The house made chips that were on each of our plates were very greasy, nearly inedible. I have spoken with people who visited on other occasions though who said that the chips were great – so perhaps we just had a bit of bad luck there. While certainly not anything I’ve been craving, I will definitely be revisiting to give them a second chance.

Two complaints about The Silver Dollar:

-Glasses of wine are $8 and bottles are $40. Give us a reason (a price break) buy a bottle!

-If you want anything other than chips with your sandwich (such as a vegetable), you must purchase the side independently. Please let us substitute, even for a small charge!
