Hot on the heels of the engagement of Prince William and Miss Catherine Middleton (well, five months after), Louisville connections continue to unfold.
Despite the amazing synchronicity of the Windsors and Louisville—from the bride’s ancestral home of Middletown, Ky. to the Indiana suburb named for the groom’s father—Louisville has been largely snubbed, at least by the bride and groom. However, Possibility City holds a special place in the heart of their extended families.
Louisville Stoneware, initially thought to be a choice provider of plates and bowls for the big day, was nixed, as the company lacks a royal warrant of appointment and, according to a Buckingham Palace insider, has “shall we say, too much blue” for the bride, who famously wore a sapphire Issa Helayel dress at her engagement press appearance. (Not to be outdone, Middletown’s Bybee Pottery is rolling out an unofficial pattern to commemorate the nuptials and, well, be yet another hanger-on.) Also, the Kentucky-bred horses hired to pull the couple’s carriage were fired before the big day even arrived, as the bride and groom will arrive via car “for security purposes.”
However, all is not lost. A taxidermy shop off of Dixie Highway is providing the groom’s stepmother, Camilla, with her millinery for the big day. The feathers for her hat reportedly come from a dove and a pheasant the woman who the groom’s mother Diana called “the Rottweiler” caught and killed with her bare hands on a recent hunting trip to Balmoral.
While the newlyweds honeymoon in Australia, William’s kid brother (and best man) Harry will retire to Louisville, where he will attend the Kentucky Derby and at least six Highlands-area social events, where he will raise the overall celebrity cachet astronomically. The party-loving prince follows in the footsteps of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, who attended the race in 2007; however, unlike the sitting monarch, “the spare,” accompanied by his cousins Beatrice and Eugenie, will pay a visit to the infield. It is likely that the redhead, who is third in line to the throne, will favor a bright green foam hat much unlike Camilla’s fine headgear—a topper sure to endear the lovely ladies of the Derby City to the eligible young prince.
Also, the morning after the Derby, Harry, a newly minted captain in the Royal Army, will pay a visit to Ft. Knox to inspect the troops. Royal handlers, some of whom are already stationed in the Queen’s namesake village of Elizabethtown, Ky., are hoping for a cloudy day.
The wedding begins at 6 a.m. Louisville time, although night owls can tune in to MSNBC starting at 3 a.m. tonight.
