There was a fairly small crowd at Uncle Slayton's last Sunday night; no doubt, many Louisvillians were still recovering from a party weekend that included both St. Patrick's Day and local March Madness contests. The Winterpills duo of Philip Price and Flora Reed were admittedly sleepless after a few days at SXSW and a long drive from Little Rock to Louisville. All in all, the band and the audience were in sync for a laid-back evening of beautifully rendered music in a cozy room.
After local band (not the basketball player) Artis Gilmore's opening set, Price and Reed came on stage to an appreciative room. They may have been tired, but their performance didn't suffer at all. They played a full set of songs, many from their newest release, All My Lovely Goners, and a generous sprinkling from all the earlier albums, including fan favorites "Cranky," "Lay Your Heartbreak," and "You Don't Love Me Yet," which were all requested from the audience. Price and Reed are very personable and gracious, and happily played the songs their fans wanted to hear.
Though both singers have very pleasant voices solo, the duo reaches another level when they sing together, which thankfully, is often. Their layered harmonies evoke the complex emotional weave of the songs from hopefulness to defiance and every heartbroken shade of blue in between. This was the fifth stop in Louisville for this Massachusetts band, and when they make the sixth one, you'll want to mark it on your calendar.
