A one-day conference at the University of Louisville will take stock of the region’s public artists, groups, projects and technologies as well as identify ways to involve communities in public art.
Registrations are being accepted this week for “Public Art and the City,” which will run from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, April 22 at the Belknap Campus. As seating is limited, registrations are strongly recommended by this Friday, April 15; university students may attend for free if they register by that date.
Panelists from a wide range of perspectives will examine public art organizations and collaborations in Louisville, Lexington and New Albany; artists’ points of view of public art; and Internet resources for public art and artists. Keynote speaker Theresa Leininger-Miller, an art history professor at the University of Cincinnati, will talk about “Courting Controversy or Placating Provincialism: 140 Years of Public Art in Cincinnati.”
Sessions will be in Ekstrom Library’s Chao Auditorium, with lunchtime roundtable discussions at the Speed Art Museum. If weather permits, symposium participants can go on a walking tour of the New Albany Bicentennial Art at the Carnegie Center for Art and History, 201 E. Spring St. in New Albany.
The public symposium is sponsored by UofL’s College of Arts and Sciences and the Arts and Culture Partnerships Initiative.
