My Germantown neighbors have been hit by the urban gardening bug. Chickens cluck in chorus with the distant trains and sirens, newly budding gardens will soon creep over every square inch of front lot space, and tomato vines will adorn front stoops like guardian gnomes once did--watered by irrigation systems connected to rain barrels. I love it.
Evidence of the slow food movement and sustainable living practices are all around Louisville, and Foxhollow Farms is a great place to immerse yourself and family in some of the action.
Located just off highway 329 in Brownsboro (about 20 minutes from downtown), Foxhollow Farms is devoted to creating a “Biodynamic Farming Community” by educating the public on farming and food choices, providing organic, sustainable food, and allowing city-mice like my family to reconnect with nature.
Every Saturday, the Foxhollow Farm Store sells fresh prepared foods for lunch or take-home, coffee and tea as well as a venue to shop for local meat and produce. Foxhollow farms 100% grass-fed beef, chicken, eggs, milk, and more.
Not only can you support this wonderful farm and feed your family the way they were intended, but every Saturday Foxhollow hosts a hands-on educational workshop. April 2nd, from 2-5 p.m. join FHF for “Ramping Up for Spring” where your family will hike and forage for ramps (wild leeks) while learning just what the heck they are. You will learn how to clean and store your treasure, then Sherry Hurley of Farm to Fork Catering will offer cooking demos and tastings involving your new-found ramps. $30 per person.
If this is a little too steep for your family’s budget, the Second Sunday of each month at Foxhollow Farm, families can participate in a guided Farm Hike for a $5.00 donation to the farm. Tours walk the pastures, explore the woodlands, and visit farm animals. A great way to see where food comes from and the inter-workings of a bonafide farm.
