If you need something to prime yourself for a Thanksgiving Day of warm fuzzies with the family, Headliners is offering a night of punk-tinged garage rock on Wednesday, November 24 at 9 p.m.

The Whigs, who have most recently been touring with Kings of Leon, including a show at London's Hyde Park in front of an estimated crowd of 65,000, hail from that hotbed of music, Athens, Georgia. They have also toured and performed along side local bands Wax Fang and My Morning Jacket in the past. They are signed to Dave Matthews label ATO.

Lead singer Parker Gispert, bassist Tim Deaux, and drummer Julian Dorio make up The Whigs trio, named one of Rolling Stone's bands to watch in 2006. Drum aficionados take note: Dorio is an admired instrumentalist, who has been profiled by drum magazines and been the recipient of Esquire magazine's award for Best Drummer in 2007.

The Whigs' current release is In the Dark, released last March, which some reviewers have found to be a more mainstream departure from their rougher-hewn predecessors. Having listened to some of the songs from their latest, I don't agree that the sound is particularly “mainstream,” a tag that often gets put on buzz bands after critics have wearied of them in pursuit of the next trendy newcomers. Whether you like the production of a particular recording or not, The Whigs are known for a putting on an energetic live show that will probably not disappoint fans of harder-edged, amped up rock.

Tickets for this 18 and over show are $12, available at the door or in advance from TicketWeb.com. Louisville bands Midnite Sons and Bad Blood will open.

The Whigs perform “Kill Me Carolyne” on David Letterman:
