We are such incredibly selfish creatures. I know because I am also one of them. When I was very small I remember distinctly having the thought that I was only human being that had those – thoughts. As in, all the other fleshy shapes of people were little more than husk dolls while I alone wandered in the rich cornucopia of inner dialogue. I also thought that I was a wolf. And that no one could see my eyes. I thought my own eyes were something way too small for other people to notice, that I could look in any direction I wanted without fellow humans taking notice. This is probably why I had no friends.
But, now – as an “adult” – I have learned that others matter. That they can see when I look them in the eye (or slightly to the left of where they happen to be) and probably have something valuable to contribute to my understanding should I be so kind as to listen. We should do more of this listening thing I’ve learned. Ready to turn on your ears? Join author Nora Rose Moosnick this Sunday, November 4th, as she shares the personal stories of immigrant Arab and Jewish Women. Stop by Carmichael’s Bookstore at 4pm for a presentation of Arab and Jewish Women in Kentucky: Stories of Accommodation and Audacity.
Featuring ten stories for across the state, Arab and Jewish Women in Kentucky follows the experiences of local women as the face of their personal culture shifts. With voices given to both recent immigrants and the children of immigrants, the daily dynamics of these women paints a vivid picture as they work through public misconceptions – as well as just the simple struggles of balancing work and family.
Tune your ears, folks, and join Moosnick this weekend as she explores the diverse voices of women from all walks. Copies of Arab and Jewish Women of Kentucky are available at both Carmichael’s stores in hardcover for $40.00. The voices may be words and the airwaves may be pages, but listening isn’t just physical, hearing should resonate.
Carmichael’s Bookstore has two area locations: 1295 Bardstown Road and 2720 Frankfort Avenue. For more information visit the event page, or call the Frankfort Avenue Store at (502) 896-6950.
