This restaurant in the original Highlands was recommended to me by someone who knows Louisville restaurants well, and all the reviews on google are positive, so I hate to the sole complainer, but I'm not going to lie, I didn't have a great experience at Baxter Station.
My boyfriend and I were five minutes late for our reservation on Saturday night, but they seated us quickly anyway, which was a plus. However, they gave us a strange little table with uncomfortably low seats in the hallway which connected the two larger dining areas. We sat across from a server's station, which I thought was an odd place to put tables.
All of the staff was friendly, and I could tell they were trying, but the service was a little slow. The restaurant seemed to be well staffed, but our server seemed too busy to be timely. That could be blamed on the fact that the place was almost full, though. Nobody was rude to us, which I guess is really what counts.
The food was presented nicely, and tasted okay. I got steamed mussels, and my boyfriend got the bourbon fried chicken. I order mussels a lot at restaurants, and this was the first time they've come without the customary crunchy toast. The broth with the mussels and the veloute sauce for the chicken were both super salty, like they were made with too much chicken base. I ordered lemon-ginger cheesecake for desert, and it was the highlight of the meal. It was light and tangy, but something like Hershey's syrup was poured on top. It was an odd choice.
Nothing was inedible, and the evening wasn't awful, it just wasn't impressive. But before you make a final decision, go check out other online reviews. Maybe this is a really good restaurant and we caught them on an off night.
