Once a year, NABC releases a special brew to commemorate good ol’ Ben Franklin’s birthday. Even though he was actually born on the 17th of January, they are releasing this special tap-only brew starting tomorrow at their two locations—the Pizzeria and the Bank Street Brewhouse. Who doesn’t like getting an early birthday present?
And why Ben Franklin’s birthday, you may be asking. It turns out that the man whose face now graces the one hundred dollar bill brewed and drank regularly.
The brew itself, called “Old Lightning Rod” is a fairly strong ale (coming in at 26 IBU and 7.5% ABV), “incorporating ‘triangular’ molasses as an adjunct.” There is a limited quantity, which usually dries up after a few days. (However, if you miss it this time, you can catch samples up in Indianapolis at the Brewers of Indiana Guild Winterfest on January 26.) This is an experiment seven years in the making, so be sure to check it out.
