    Bit to Do

So I was out at Bardstown Bound this past Saturday enjoying a very pleasant, sunny day, doing some live tweeting for Louisville.com, and waiting for the impending Rapture due to hit at around 6pm.  At first I was very skeptical of the doom to come our way until at around 5:45 I saw dark clouds starting to roll in and so I did the only logical thing I could think of at the time...I headed to Boombozz Taphouse on Eastern Parkway to have a few beers and people watch (or technically, watch to see if people started disappearing before my eyes).  I was coerced by my buddy Michael Beckmann, the bar manager, to try a flight which included Goose Island Matilda, Arcadia Ales Whit Sun, Three Floyd's Gumball Head, and Southern Tier Unearthly IPA.

As I took my first sip of Matilda, a Belgian style Pale Ale, I had to take a look around and make sure I was still at Boombozz because it felt like I had just gone to Heaven.  It is such a malty sweet beer with a little spice kick that I really enjoy (after I eventually finished my flight I bought a 22oz of Matilda to share with my friend who was at the bar with me; so that should say a little about how much I liked it).  Next up was the Whit Sun from Arcadia, a wheat beer made in small batches using brewing methods originating in England and on authentic British equipment.  Arcadia brews a nice wheat beer that I found very drinkable (and in my opinion is better than the good, but over-hyped Oberon from Bells).  Another one of my fave, fave, favorites from this flight was the Gumball Head from Three Floyds up in Munster, IN.  The aroma of this American Wheat Ale starts with notes of grapefruit & lemon, but is SO well balanced and has such low bitterness that I felt like I could sit and sip on one of these all day (or at least until the real Rapture).  Last on the list was the Unearthly IPA from Southern Tier, a big Imperial IPA from the highly regarded brewers out of Lakewood, NY.  I've not had a bad beer from Southern Tier, even their big beers are so well balanced that ending my flight of basically non-hoppy beers with this IPA was not crazy as you might think; as a matter of fact, I think it might have been the perfect way.  I can appreciate the craftsmanship that must go into making a big, 9.5% ABV IPA like this easy to sit and drink.

Overall, this was a great flight of great beers.  My two top choices would probably have to be the Goose Island Matilda and the 3 Floyd's Gumball Head because I wanted another of both once I finished with the two on my flight, but by no means do I take anything away from the Unearthly IPA or the Whit Sun, both were delicious.  If you see any or all of them on tap, or in a bottle for that matter, sweep them up quickly and you can thank me later....maybe give up your spot in Heaven to me during the Rapture??
