Getting a new girlfriend or boyfriend is an exciting thing. Young love is almost magical: the butterflies in the stomach, the still-novel feel of previously untasted lips, a whole new life to explore and make part of your own. Of course, people often come with baggage – personality quirks, perhaps, or a dysfunctional family, or maybe several murderous ex-partners (although probably not that last one in real life).
Tomorrow night, Midnights at the Baxter presents “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.” This film tells the story of the eponymous musician who meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, and ends up having to defeat her “seven evil exes” in order to be with her, all set to a killer soundtrack featuring bands like Metric, Beck, Black Lips, and Broken Social Scene.
“Scott Pilgrim” is based on the graphic novel series of the same name by Bryan Lee O’Malley. O’Malley was nervous about his books being adapted into film, assuming it would become an insipid action comedy, but ultimately he needed the money.
The film is directed by Edgar Wright, who is famous for what is possibly the epitome of the horror-comedy, “Shaun of the Dead,” and the cop comedy “Hot Fuzz.” It stars Michael Cera, who continues to milk his reputation as the kinda-lame-yet-lovably-awkward geek which began with the television show “Arrested Development” and continued with films such as “Juno,” “Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist,” and “Year One.” Mary Elizabeth Winstead co-stars, coming off of a spat of horror films such as “Final Destination 3,” “Black Christmas,” and “Death Proof.”
“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” plays at midnight tomorrow night at Baxter Avenue Theater, which is located at 1250 Bardstown Road. More information can be found at the theater’s website.
