Megan Malone used to be a picky eater, whose interest in talking about food stretched only as far as her duty announcing the lunch menu at school each morning. “Pizza, chicken nuggets, and brunch for lunch were my favorite announcements to make,” she said.
Today, Megan shares her love of eating with readers of her Louisville food blog, megabiteslouisville. Though she works full time as the Digital Director for Cox Media Group, Megan spends her spare time dining at local, or locally owned, Louisville restaurants and sharing the scoop with her followers.
“I got the idea to start blogging in October of 2011 when I was sitting in Bourbon Bistro, swirling around an Old Fashioned drink. I noticed on my Facebook newsfeed someone wrote ‘really getting sick of people posting their food pictures on FB.’ I knew he was talking about me,” said Megan. “It may have been the bourbon in my system, but it suddenly struck me to stop torturing my friends with my food musings and put them all on one website instead.”
Megan, who describes Louisville’s food scene as eclectic, inspiring, and “awesomesauce,” also shares her food news on the radio, broadcasting her reviews every Thursday at 7:45 a.m. with the Ramsey Brothers on Lite 106.9.
Though Megan’s blog is focused on local fare, her work is also about people, community, and promoting local business.
“Dining out is such a social staple of our community and really brings people together,” said Megan. “I especially like providing a platform to local nonprofits to promote fundraisers and helping small business owners with publicity to help jump start their dreams.”
As megabiteslouisville gains popularity, Megan’s initiative goes beyond her regular write-ups. She recently interviewed Food Network star Guy Fieri (pictured), and has been asked to start a podcast. Her favorite restaurants in Louisville (for now) are Village Anchor and Le Coop. As far as Megan’s own cooking skills, well, “I don’t actually cook,” she said. “That’s why I married a guy who can. Upgrade!”
