Attention, kindly sirs and madams. 'Tis time for the Market Fair at Locust Grove, where 18th century history will be brought to life for your family's goodly pleasure. To be sure, readers, the colonial interpreters at William Croghan's home, located six miles up-river from the Falls of the Ohio, will greatly surpass this feeble and miserable attempt at writing in the King's English. And, therefore, dear reader, I heartily bid you adieu.
OK. I’m back. And I will never attempt writing in 18th century dialogue again.
I hope my attempt at historical amusement will not dissuade you from attending what sounds like an educational and enjoyable outing this weekend at Locust Grove, a National Historic Landmark. If you're new in town or haven't visited the beautiful Georgian home since a middle school field trip, this weekend provides the perfect opportunity to see the home that Revolutionary War hero and George Rogers Clark's brother-in-law William Croghan built in 1790, when Kentucky was still the "west."
The spirit of the 1700s will come alive with mock battles between Clark's Illinois Regiment of Virginia and Native Americans as well as British Dragoons and German Hessians. If historical battles aren't your thing, instead shop for 18th century furniture, clothing, and candles or partake of some of our founder's favorite fare, such as stew, cornbread, and handcrafted wines and ales.
The entertainment line-up sounds unique and enthralling for both kids and adults:
- The Amazing Budabi Brothers (jugglers)
- Signora Bella (slackrope walker)
- Father, Son & Friends (traditional Celtic music)
- Jack Salt (traditional sea chanteys)
- Dance instructors teach jigs and reels
- Visit an 18th century doctor to cure your ills
