Per a press release - The Speed Art Museum presents a weekend of family fun filled with puppet shows, hands-on family art activities, black light face painting, and more! Enjoy performances of Madcap Puppet Theatre of Cincinnati, OH with shows at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday. Hands-on art projects will be ongoing from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. each day. Visitors will also be invited to explore the new Quick Start Story Gallery for families.
Madcap Puppet Theatre presents a new take on The Elves and the Shoemaker. Everyone knows the story of the little elves that secretly make shoes for a poor cobbler while he sleeps. But, did you know that the elves also escape the clutches of a sinister Elf Snatcher and barely avoid becoming a midnight snack for a creepy house cat? Join the elves, Leo and Bernie, as they slip in and out of trouble in this funny adaptation of a classic fairy tale. These performances are presented in black light and are suited for children of all ages with an adult.
Make and take art activities will be ongoing each day from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. Black light face painting and a special black light art project will take place in Art Sparks. A beading activity inspired by the current exhibition Sacred Air, Breath of Life: Selections from the Native-American Collection, led by Emily Forrester, will take place within the Quick Start Story Gallery and printmaking workshops inspired by the current exhibition Howard Hodgkin: Prints and Process, led by Cathy Shepherd, will be held in the Museum’s Foyer.
Quick Start is an interactive gallery where visitors can create their own story on a string about a favorite artwork, explore family portraits and draw their own, curate images of artwork to go into a series of miniature galleries, and make an abstract artwork using magnetic wooden blocks.
Admission to Madcap performances is $6 for members, $8 for non-members. Madcap ticket purchase includes general admission to museum and all art activities.
The Speed Art Museum is Kentucky’s largest art museum with a collection that spans 6,000 years of human creativity. The Speed currently presents Kentucky Antiques from the Noe Collection: A Gift to the Commonwealth, on view through Spring 2012, Sacred Air Breath of Life: Selections from the Native-American Collection, on view through February 12, 2012, Howard Hodgkin Prints and Process, on view through February 26, 2012 and Quick Start Story Gallery, a family installation on view through Summer 2012.
Museum hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; Friday 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. (open late); Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Galleries are closed on Monday and Tuesday.
General admission to the Museum is $10, free for members.
