For travel between short distances, biking is likely the most advantageous mode of transportation. The benefits are unequalled, both physically and environmentally, but the danger of bicycling among traffic keeps many Louisvillians traveling in their cars even in the most beautiful weather. Louisville wants to increase biking and walking throughout all parts of our city, making each a feasible mode of regular transportation.
The public is encouraged to attend any of the three upcoming forums to review the recently drafted 20-year Pedestrian and Bicycle Master Plans. The plans were originally designed with community input, but you can be part of the finalization that will affect alternative transportation through Louisville for years to come.
The Pedestrian Master Plan seeks to expand walkways by doubling the walkway network, and expanding deficient sidewalk and crossing locations, while reducing pedestrian injuries by half.
The Bicycle Master Plan (view plan) aims to increase bicycling activity throughout all parts of Louisville, while simultaneously reducing the number of cyclists killed or injured by motor vehicles.
The forums are open to the public and will be held by Districts 9, 5, and 22, Metro Public Works, Step Up Louisville (the city's Pedestrian program), and Bike Louisville (the city's bicycle program).
