Brian Brohm made his season debut with the Canadian Football League’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Thursday night.

The 6-foot-3, 232-pound quarterback, a former Trinity High School star and University of Louisville standout, completed 16 of 28 passes for 146 yards with two interceptions while also running twice for 17 yards and a touchdown in Winnipeg’s 52-26 loss to visiting Hamilton.

Many people in the Louisville area know the backstory of the 29-year-old Brohm, who turns 30 on Sept. 23. He led Trinity to a trio of Class 4-A state titles and earned Mr. Football honors his senior season (2003) before moving on to UofL. For the Cardinals he earned Big East Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2005 and was MVP of the 2007 Orange Bowl, which UofL won.

Brohm was a second-round selection (No. 56 overall) by the Green Bay Packers in the 2008 NFL Draft. He was expected to compete for the job of Aaron Rodgers' backup, but was quickly surpassed by Matt Flynn on the depth chart. Brohm spent his entire rookie season on the Packers’ roster, but never made it onto the field in a regular-season game before Green Bay waived him in 2009. Brohm then played for the Buffalo Bills in 2009 and 2010. He played in three games, starting two (one in each year), in two seasons for the Bills. In the NFL he’s completed 27 of 52 passes for 252 yards with five interceptions and no touchdowns.

Brohm then played three games over two seasons for the Las Vegas Locomotives of the United Football League before heading north of the border. He signed with Hamilton in 2013, but spent the entire season on the injured list before being traded to Winnipeg in 2014.

Brohm spent all of the 2014 seaso in Winnipeg, serving as the team’s backup QB. He dressed for all 18 games, but only saw action in a few. In his first, and so far only, career CFL start, he completed 14 of 23 passes for 194 yards. For the season he completed 39 of 70 passes (55.7 percent) for 454 yards with one interception and no touchdowns before suffering a season-ending hand injury.

Brohm didn’t play in Winnipeg’s season-opening 30-26 win over Saskatchewan last Saturday, but was forced into action in the Blue Bombers’ second game Thursday night when starter Drew Willy left with an apparent head injury late in the first quarter against the Tiger-Cats, who led 17-7 at the end of the first period and 38-13 at halftime. If Willy's injury is serious, Brohm could be Winnipeg’s starter when the Blue Bombers take on Montreal next Friday night, and maybe beyond that.
