Louisville-based jazz group Liberation Prophecy will celebrate the release of their new CD, Invisible House, at Headliners Music Hall this Thursday, May 9, at 9:00 p.m.
The band's guiding force is composer, arranger, and saxophonist Jacob Duncan, who has taken the ensemble from Louisville coffee houses, to Denton, Texas (where notably, Norah Jones became vocalist for awhile), to Brooklyn, and back again to Louisville. He has assembled a talented group of musicians including guitarist Craig Wagner, trombonist Chris Fortner, bassist Chris Fitzgerald, drummer Michael Hyman, trumpeter Kris Eans, and Steve Good on tenor and bass clarinet. Adding vocals to this veteran group is Carly Johnson who will also be participating in the Louisville Free Public Library's How-To Festival on Saturday, May 11 along with Duncan and Wagner. They will play music and talk about song writing and collaborating as a band.
Duncan has described Invisible House as having a little more rock, but essentially, "These are actually just songs…they’re stories, and they’re colors and melodies that you could actually remember. That’s the idea—something that’s listenable, but at the same time collaborative and eclectic.” Will Oldham makes an appearance on the new album, as do Greta Smith and Joe Manning.
Collaboration among artists is very important to Duncan, who welcomes the opportunity to work with other musicians. This is one of the goals of the Liberation Living Room project, which creates a space for performers to come together and share songs and stories as well as to introduce young people to different kinds of music. Recently, LLR welcomed Norah Jones, Rachel Grimes, and the Squallis Puppeteers.
Tyrone Cotton will open the show Thursday night with doors opening at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available online in advance ($13) and at the door ($15).
