Just Creations is hosting the second annual Passport Adventure on Saturday, July 28. This free event, which runs from noon to 4 p.m., allows children ages 5-12 to work on several arts and craft projects from around the world.
“The kids will go from station to station, going around the world,” said Sandra Crismon, education coordinator at Just Creation. “It’s not only fun, but educational, too.”
Each station will represent different regions of the world like Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. As the children travel to each station, they will create regional art projects and learn about the different cultures. Each child will have a passport that can be stamped when a project is completed. All the arts and crafts created by the children can be taken home.
Some of the projects the children will work on include printmaking with African Adinkra stamps, rolling recycled paper beads and making a Vietnam-inspired necklace, shaping a Middle Eastern good luck charm, and creating a Latin American worry doll. There’s even a scavenger hunt.
“The scavenger hunt focuses on recycled items,” said Crismon. “There are signs around the store that show what country the items are from. Some are made from unusual recycled materials.”
The children must locate six of the 10 specially marked items to receive a stamp on their passports. They need to identify the item, the country of origin, and the recycled material it is made from to get credit.
The arts and craft stations are all run by local artists and volunteers. Many of the volunteers are members of Just Creations’ outreach committee and board of directors. Last year, Passport Adventure was visited by roughly 65 children. This year, the staff and volunteers hope that number increases.
Just Creations is located at 2722 Frankfort Avenue. Parents who want to bring their children to Passport Adventure should expect to stay for about an hour to complete each of the stations.
