    Louisvillians are promised a hot, bright summer: weather that just screams

    let’s go to the pool!

    Everyone knows it isn’t

    really

    summer until the public pools are open--and now that June is upon us, you’ll have your pick. With many Louisville pools traditionally beginning operation during summer hours during Memorial Day weekend, so it’s finally time to get back in the water for an active, aquatic season that just about everyone can enjoy.

    But what’s the best way spend your pool time, and spend it optimally, after an extra-punishing winter? We have your guide to some of Louisville’s best and most popular swimming pools here, so look no further--try one and all! All outdoor pools listed are open May 25, 26, 27, June 1 and 2, and from June 8 through August 3.

     

    Algonquin Park

    This area for this 16.38 acre park was acquired in 1928 and currently boasts a wide range of amenities, including ballfields, a playground, picnic areas, a sprayground, walking paths, tennis and volleyball courts, and most importantly, a beautiful outdoor swimming pool complete with a large child-friendly section. The park is open dawn to dusk, with the pool itself accessible starting at 1 p.m., Sunday May 25th.

    Mary T. Meagher Aquatic Center

    If you’re looking for a pool--and park--that truly has everything, this is where you ought to be swimming. Complete with a year-round indoor as well as several outdoor pools, the Mary T. Meagher Aquatic center also includes a fully equipped gym and weight room, and offers swimming and fitness classes, as well as a therapy pool, for which swimmers must be signed up via consent form. Daily admission for swimmers 13 and older is $5.10, $3.00 for those 12 and under, $4.50 for seniors, and $3.50 for the use of the therapy pool.

    Fairdale

    Fairdale is conveniently located within Nelson Hornbeck Park and offers slightly later hours than many other Louisville area public pools, opening at 1 p.m. and closing at 7 rather than 6 p.m. Fairdale will be closed on Mondays for maintenance.

    Crescent Hill Park

    For many families in the Louisville area, a homemade summer vacation isn’t complete without a visit to one of Louisville’s many splash parks, complete with interactive and fixtures at every turn! Visit Crescent Hill Park for an afternoon of out-of-the-ordinary aquatic fun. And with its selection of picnic tables, a playground, and several tennis courts, Crescent Hill has far more to offer than swimming.

    Louisville Waterfront Park

    Everyone loves the refreshing sight of the Louisville waterfront on hot, sticky Ohio River Valley afternoons, and this widely-loved park has so much to offer. With a total area of 85 acres, the Waterfront includes an expansive playground, a concert venue, bike and jogging paths, an exciting waterplay area open from May to September (depending on the weather), and plenty of beautiful space to picnic and be active. The park opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 11 p.m., and the waterplay area is accessible from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

    Lakeside Swim Club

    Lakeside offers pool and club memberships and includes the opportunity to participate in many aquatic activities and lessons, including scuba diving, dive boarding, swimming and synchronized swimming, kayaking and lifeguard certification. The beautiful,

    enormous

    outdoor pool is clean and spacious, with plenty of room for young children. Open swim is available from 6 a.m. to 8:45 p.m. weekdays, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, and from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. Join or come to the pool as a guest!
