Joan Osborne’s new material will capture your attention Saturday at Headliners

Joan Osborne was the mid-nineties golden child of Anchorage, KY when her single, One Of Us (you know it….what if God was one of us, just a slob like one of us, just a stranger on the bus, trying to make his way home), raced to the top of the charts and could be heard everywhere.

Not to take anything away from that success, but if that is the Joan Osborne you know, please give her another chance! Her new album, Bring It On Home, is the album of the week on WFPK and I am shocked every time I hear a song from it. Osborne’s voice has matured into a multi-textured, blues-y gem that goes deep on every song.

Osborne feels like she is going back to her roots and how she started, “I cut my teeth in New York blues clubs singing songs like this,” she remembers. “I’d do three or four one-hour sets per night. That’s where I really learned to sing.”

On this album, her seventh, she puts her spin on some vintage songs by artists such as Ike and Tina Turner, Al Green and Muddy Waters. Osborne is also currently finishing an album of her own, original music.

Your chance to see Joan Osborne live is this Saturday April 14, 2012. She will be playing at Headliners Music Hall at 8pm with Lera Lynn supporting. Tickets are $25.
