Carmichaels Bookstore was packed like sardines on Wednesday evening when Jim Gaffigan stopped by during his “Dad Is Fat” book tour. Despite the hot temperature and the cramped shop everyone seemed to enjoy meeting the comedian and hearing him take questions from people in the crowd. They voiced questions like, “Will you write a book about eating?”, “Is another kid on the way?” and “Do you actually like hot pockets?” Jim also thanked some fans for dropping off some Plehn’s Bakery donuts to his bus before the event. Jim was hilarious, friendly, and a caring guest to the bookstore. He even stopped talking to make sure a woman who had lain down to take a nap was alive or not. Thankfully she was alive and just incredibly tired. I can’t blame her. Carmichael’s was incredibly hot. After Jim talked for about twenty minutes, it was time for him to sign books. When “Dad Is Fat” was bought or brought in, a Carmichael’s employee would give the customer a card with a letter. The letter groups organized people into parties of twenty, very
similar to the plane ticket system or deli ticket process. When your letter group was called, then it was your turn to get in line and meet THE Jim Gaffigan. Like I said, Jim was friendly and he really cared about his fans. He actually talked to his admirers and wrote personal messages in their books. In my copy he wrote, “Alex, the best writer ever,” which is quite generous and far from the truth. However, it still made me feel special. I think I can speak for everyone that attended the event that it was one of the best and most memorable times of their lives.
