There are plenty of choices for great pizza in the Highlands. Yet somehow, Uncle Maddio's, the new pizza joint at the corner of Grinstead Drive and Bardstown Road, makes going out for pizza seem like a fresh idea again. Throw in an innovative Saturday morning Kid's Art Camp, and you've got a worthwhile family dining outing.
If you haven't taken your kids to Uncle Maddio's yet, you're in for a treat. Meals are inexpensive--$3.49 for a six-inch pizza and drink--but also healthy. Your children can choose from white, wheat, or gluten-free crust, pick from six different sauces, add toppings like spinach or free range grilled chicken (there are 45 toppings in all), and only have to wait six minutes for their masterpiece to arrive at the table.
And those six minutes will fly by at the drink counter. Trust me. Enter the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine. For his birthday dinner, my eight year-old son took two friends to Uncle Maddio's. Concocting their own special blends of raspberry Orange Crush and strawberry lemonade was a real highlight (especially because he's usually on a strict water or milk-only regimen). Remember making old-school "suicides" at the ballpark? Same idea, but with a touch screen. Control + creativity + soda = kid heaven.
Every Saturday Uncle Maddio's hosts their free Kid's Art Camp from 11:00 am-2:00 pm. So while parents have a lunch date (within earshot), kids ages 3-13 are invited to paint, color, and create fun crafts. The founder, Matt Andrew (aka Maddio), proudly puts an emphasis on families and kids, aiming to do "real" arts and crafts, just as he serves "real" food. Maddio can consider this family "real" fans.
