Press passes were limited for our publication during this year's Forecastle event, so I was only able to get a ticket for the Sunday show, but wanted to catch bands that were playing both Saturday & Sunday. So rather than pay the additional sixty or seventy bucks to get in, I decided to get crafty. I used my ticket late Saturday afternoon, instead of Sunday, and thank god the people at the gate weren't sticklers. The following day I snuck in just right before the Flaming Lips and Against Me. You see, desperate times call for desperate measures.
In the past, I'd never been to a Forecastle show, and didn't really know what to expect, but assumed it would be like most any other three-day concert event. Meaning that it would be full of out of town kids that don't get the chance to shower for the entire weekend, hippies that often never shower for the weekend, and people like myself that shower every weekend, but have to get half-blitzed before doing most anything in public. I was mostly right.
Me and another guy that I run with smuggled in a fifth of gin, and decided that we must drink it in less than an hour. Ok, so we shared it with a third guy, but either way, that ruins you for the rest of the evening. I got there just in time for Cake, and though they were remarkable, every time I took my eyes away from the stage, all there were before me were shirtless-shoeless hippies frolicking and dancing dances that only drugs could influence. The people watching was nearly as good as the show itself.
