Yesterday I took some time to look at some of the baseball greats to come through area colleges; today I picked up where I left off by looking at the outfield.

In Left Field is Louisville’s Doc Powers, which is quite possible, the greatest baseball name I’ve ever heard. Powers stayed in the River City upon making his way to major league baseball by joining the roster of the Louisville Colonels in 1898.  Other pro-teams Powers took the field for includes the Washington Senators, Philadelphia Athletics and New York Highlanders

Playing Center is another Cardinal, Hod Kibble who, in addition to being a standout at Louisville played in the majors for the Boston Braves in the mid 1920’s.

And, at right field is Eastern Kentucky grad Earl Combs who had an eleven year career with the New York Yankees after leaving Richmond.

All this leads up to the current rosters of Louisville and Kentucky going head to head tonight in Lexington for a game that starts at 6:30. It was be broadcasted live and nationally on TV on Fox Sports South and locally on the radio WDNA. Meanwhile, on the other teams that were represented here front; Indiana University stays home tomorrow to play Indiana State in their own inner-state rivalry game; that game starts at 3 p.m. Morehead State also stays home for their 5:00 game tonight against Georgetown (KY) College. Meanwhile Eastern Kentucky’s next game isn’t until April 13th when they face off against Eastern Illinois University at home. And, just south of Cincinnati Northern Kentucky plays Indianapolis on the 14th for a noon game.

    About Dave Rose

Recently, I completed a Masters degree in Education and have been writing for Louisville.com for over a year now, prior to that I published a humor book for young adults titled Wearing Socks with Sandals, a book about getting through high school, college, and all of the requisite problems that present themselves during that time. Currently, I spend much of my time in classroom settings as well as writing in various areas. Of course, I’m a big sports fan and love music and film, and love finding new stuff around Louisville.
