 | SITTING PRETTY No, you are not looking at a real saddle. But it’s easy to see why you might think so, given that South Carolina woodworker Shane Howell’s life-size Faithful Mount is a painstakingly accurate mahogany and basswood copy of a real training saddle, right down to the smallest detail. “I made this piece to illustrate the very best in carving,” Howell says. “I wanted to overshadow any handcrafted work I have seen or done.” His meticulously carved wood pieces start at $3,000; the saddle costs $20,000.
