As I was walking down Bardstown road last weekend, my friend and I noticed the new sandwich shop, Tom + Chee. Originally from Cincinnati, they opened their third location in the Highlands about a month ago. When we saw it was a shop dedicated to grilled cheese, we had to check it out!
I had heard about them before; they couldn’t have been featured on the Travel Channel’s Man V. Food Nation and Amazing Eats for no reason. And so of course as we entered, a long line of hungry (and curious) Louisvillians waited to place their orders. As my friend and I waited in line, we were impressed by the simple yet different ambience with a chalkboard wall filled with all kinds of unique varieties such as Grippo’s BBQ+Bacon Grilled Cheese Sandwiches to Grilled Cheese Donuts. Yes, donuts. They also serve a variety of soups, which are said to be homemade on their website, and salads.
I, being vegetarian, decided on the Grilled Mac+Cheese sandwich (I wasn’t quite brave enough to try one of the donut specialties). However, as excited as I was, it didn’t quite hit the spot. I tasted more grease than I did cheese. My friend and I were pretty disappointed. Even so, I will definitely be going back to try one of the famous Grilled Cheese Donuts; how could I not?
