    Bit to Do

Have a ball bowling this New Year's Eve

I've loved the sign at Ten Pin Lanes on Shelbyville Road since I was a kid: Fun Is Bowling. So simple. So succinct. So true?

I don't come from a family of bowling enthusiasts. I went a few times when I was a teenager just because there are only so many things you can do late at night—legally—when you're a teenager. But I think Fun is Bowling/Bowling is Fun is especially true when you bring your kids along.

And with New Year's Eve approaching, you may be looking for a safe, indoor place to have a little fun with your family. And be home by midnight.

A google search will guide you to your nearest bowling alley, but there are two in town that I can recommend for a night (or day) of family fun. Kingpin Lanes in J-town is large, clean, and ready to welcome your kiddos, whether they are so little that they still need bumpers, or whether they are ready to scope out the arcade after they've bowled their game. They have a large cafe as well, as no trip to the bowling alley would be complete without greasy fried food or popcorn. They're open until 1:00 am on New Year's Eve, and although you probably won't make it out that late with the little ones, their X-Treme Bowling Party (dimmed lights, thumping club music, DJ, live band, and food and drink specials) from 9:30 pm-1:00 am sounds fun for older teens.

Ten Pin Lanes (or “Fun is Bowling”) across from Mall St. Matthews is also open this Monday night for New Year's Eve family fun. Like Kingpin, Ten Pin has a late night party option, but they also host a special from 6:00-9:00 pm, making it an ideal New Year's Eve party spot with your family. $80 covers shoe rental, pizza and soft drink pitchers, and bowling for six people.

A night out bowling and kids tucked in bed by the time the ball drops? Sounds fun to me!

    About Anna Frye

After living in Chicago, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Colorado, my husband and I made our (hopefully? probably?) final move back to Louisville, where I was born and raised. Ahhh...it's nice to be home. Now I'm busy making sure my three little ones learn to love the quirks and traditions of their new hometown: Kentucky Derby Festival, no school on Oaks Day, grits and hot browns (not necessarily together), monograms, parks, festivals, and even our seasonal allergies.
